Summary: Edward persuades Bella to take up singing lessons with the Cullens.

It was around seven o’clock when I rang the doorbell to the Cullen’s household. The smooth wooden front door was over twice my height and always seemed to make me feel slightly insignificant to the family, even before I’d stepped through the door.

Moments after I made contact with the small button, the huge door was opened swiftly and I looked up to meet the friendly eyes of Carlisle.

“Welcome, Bella” He said with a smile on his pale face. He reached his free arm to its full length and gestured for me to come inside.

The whole family was sitting in the large living room, with the many chairs crowded around the gleaming, white grand piano, at which Edward was sat.

They smiled at me encouragingly, obviously seeing the intimidated and slightly embarrassed look on my face. Why was I so nervous? I’d been to this house countless times before, and had never been scared. What was so different now?

I slowly took one step into the grand house and, forgetting about the polished stone floor, skidded in my soft trainers. Emmett was the first to grab my arm and steady me, although the rest of the family jumped up, too slow to come to my rescue.

“Careful there, Bella, don’t want you getting hurt at your first lesson, it might put you off” His grin was basically as wide as his face.

“Thanks” I mumbled, my face slowly turning the colour of a ripe tomato. The embarrassment had already started, and I hadn’t even sung one note yet.

“You ready to sing your heart out Bella?” Alice chirped from the leather seat at the other side of the brightly lit room. She also had a grin on her face – though not as wide and cheesy as Emmett’s.

“Sure” I said, trying to sound enthusiastic about the whole situation. This was going to be torture. Pure torture.

“Let’s get started then,” Esme said beside Alice, raising her arms. “What would you like to sing first, Bella?”

“You’re letting me choose?” I asked, surprised. When I realised I was pointing at myself, a gently lowered my hand and started to carefully step forward into the middle of the living room.

“Yes, of course, Bella. You’re the guest after all” She replied giving me a quick smile. I returned the expression and walked towards her, more hurriedly now, as she held out a pile of music, neatly arranged into Soprano, 2nd Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass.

“Wow, you have so much beautiful music” I said trying to quickly glance at each piece before deciding it might be too hard for my inexperienced voice.
Crap. How am I going to choose? What if I choose the one they all hate? Damn.

I pulled a random sheet out and looked at it. At the top of the new-looking sheet of paper were the words “Livin’ on a prayer”. Bon Jovi. That’ll do.

“How about this one?” I asked and lifted it up for Edward to see. He nodded and smiled at me encouragingly. I obviously still had a panicked expression.

”Bon Jovi it is” Edward announced, rising from the piano stool to help his family push the seating back. I saw Emmett’s face light up.

“Good choice, Bells. Love that song” he said patting my shoulder.

Why were they pushing the seats away? Were we going somewhere? Rosalie answered my question before I had time to utter it.

“You can’t sing sitting down. You have to stand up, or your lungs and diaphragm won’t be able to sustain the right amount of air. Didn’t you know that?” She looked confused.

“I don’t know much about singing,” I answered truthfully. “To be honest, I’ve only ever done it in the shower. Ask Edward”

I got a few worried expressions at that. Edward chuckled at his family’s shocked response.

I hurried to explain. “He was the one who told me I sang in the shower. You can, erm, hear from my room. Thin walls, I suppose”

The shocked expressions calmed. There was a long, awkward silence, until jasper reached out and took the pieces of paper from my hands and gave them out to the appropriate person. Emmett was on bass, Jasper and Carlisle on tenor, Rosalie and Esme on Alto, me on 2nd soprano and Alice on soprano.

We assembled ourselves in an orderly manner and Edward made his way to the piano. He glanced swiftly at the music and began playing fluently. My mouth gaped open as he smiled at me, not looking at the music or his hands. I shouldn’t be surprised. The music sounded strange on piano; different from the usual guitars I heard it on. But it sounded better, if it could, when Edward played it.

Suddenly, Emmett came in with the first lyrics of the song in a deep voice. He was brilliant, even though the first words were spoken. Hearing him use such a low voice made me want to giggle, but I restrained myself, thinking I might hurt his feelings.

From hearing the song many times before, (to be honest who hasn’t?) I knew the lyrics off by heart, but I still wanted the music in front of me, partially to hide Edward from my to protect my mouth from falling open again.

We all came in at the first verse at the right time. I was surprised at myself. I didn’t think I’d be able to read the music, let alone sing along first time. I kept my eyes focused on the 2nd soprano stave and wouldn’t let my gaze budge, or I knew I fluff up. When we got to the chorus, I let my music fall a little so I could look around at the family. They were all looking back at me, smiling. None of them had their music in front of them like me. I suddenly had that feeling of insignificance again at the pit of my stomach, but tried to hide it with a faint smile.

We came to the end of the song, and Edward glanced up at me from where he was sitting, behind the piano. He faded the last note off, and smiled.

“I told you she was good” he said, looking at me with a grin on his face.

“Well, she had to be good at something” Emmett replied. Rosalie punched him in the arm “Ow” He shouted, rubbing his arm.

“Don’t insult her then, you ass. You’re just jealous, ‘cos she better than you” Rosalie said matter-of-factly.

“I have only one complaint,” Alice said as she moved from being beside me to being in front. She put one thin finger on the top of my music and pulled it down so it was just at waist height. “You were singing to your music.”

She grinned as she saw my face relax. She looked behind her.
“Sing to Edward, he’s in front of you” And with that, she bounced back to her original space, so I could see the look on Edward’s face. He seemed pleased.
I smiled back.

“So… what’s next?” I said happily.
